Sydney Smith

Have you heard of Sydney Smith (1839 – 1889)? Very popular in his day, you might still find a Star Folio book containing some pieces by him. He wrote nearly 400 piano compositions in all, arranging many of them for piano duet and the Sydney Smith Archive aims to collate and preserve/rescue his manuscripts from oblivion.

He had a reputation as a recitalist and piano teacher in fashionable circles, becoming very famous not only in England but also in America, Europe and Australia. As with many Victorian artistes, musical taste and social climate changed as the 19th gave way to the 20th century but his music is worth discovering; brillante, flamboyant, effective and fun they are accessible listening with melodies to delight and sometimes amuse.
