Music for Cruising

The piano duet ensemble is ideal for cruise ships – an ‘orchestral’ repertoire and versatility from 2 people on 1 piano, from quiet subtlety to full power with instrumental colour and tonal variety.

Anne & Geoffrey made their début cruise recital series in 2005 – 3 weeks on board the celebrated Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth 2 during the part of her world cruise between Hong Kong and Dubai. It was just after the devastating tsunami on Boxing Day of 2004 and, having crossed the seas where it occurred, one of the programmes was dedicated to those who had been affected and included a performance of the emotive first movement of Tchaikovsky’s 6th symphony, The Pathétique (arranged for piano duet by Tchaikovsky himself, composed and given its first performance only days before he himself died). It was a very moving recital and some tears were shed among the audience; the piano duet repertoire is indeed powerful in its appeal.

Other cruises have followed, on other ships to other ports of call, but every time the audience has included those who have never seen the spectacle and interweaving of four hands on one keyboard or heard the different and varied piano duet repertoire before; their comments reflect their enjoyment...

Comments made on cruises about our recitals:

‘I shall remember your magnificent concerts for the rest of my life’

‘Your concerts were the highlight of the cruise for me’

‘Your concerts were the best thing on the cruise’

‘A performance to die for’

‘Unmissable – unforgettable’

When facilities are available a camera can be focused on the hands and the image projected onto a screen. This gives the whole audience an added dimension and view of what can be an ‘acrobatic’ display at times.

If you are a cruise entertainment agent, recruiting musicians for a cruise ship line and looking for something different, do consider the piano duet. Programmes can be offered that are attractive, appealing and wide-ranging in style – ones the passengers will always remember.
